I've come to understand that now. My friend wasn't a fan of it either. I don't do enough of this to have an opinion.

For those following this thread that may be interested in learning more about the Orbital Ringflash you can see it Here . The site offers some examples.

Food for thought - When observing portrait work it is always a good idea to look at the catch light in the subjects eyes. You can often learn a lot about the  shot from the catch light (how many lights / flashes were used, position of light / flash, type of reflector, umbrella, soft box used, etc.) Also look at shadows, or lack of shadow.

Thanks for sharing Jane  Smiley

Thanks for the tip =)

Yes, I can see the ring light in the catchlight in the eyes. I would have dialed down the exposure just a hair. But it depends on how much control you have. At .5 stop control you are probably right. At .3 may be one click down is too much. At .1 stop control you need to 1 or 2 clicks down in my opinion. But on the other hand, every rule is made to be broken and there are great photogs out there who disagree with my tastes on this one.

On the flatness of the lighting, just because you are using a ring light doesn't preclude you from using a hair light, or a rim light. Adding two rim lights, one on each side would have given you the beauty look on the skin, but added some depth for the shot, at least on the first shot. One the second only a hair light would have probably been needed to add some pop.
