do you have 'some particular thing' in your mind when you go out to shoot ?
or does a subject/scene present itself and you just try to catch it somehow?
or do you have this increasingly gnawing vision that is nebulously building in your mind, that you don't know what it really totally is, but you are looking for it, almost subconsciously, building up, until you see it and can catch it with the camera ?

Sometimes there is an image in my head and the task is to create it. Other times I see a great subject and do my best to capture it. Once in a while it is more a feeling and i just know when it is right. Interesting question.
thanks

For me the opportunity and subject generally presents itself although I sometimes go out with a specific plan in mind.

For me there is always a purpose and then something special happens along the way! There have been many cases where I plan a certain shot based on location or weather or just trying something a little different when alongs comes this magic I wasn't expecting. Cheers JIM

Seems to me we had a thread like this some time ago. Anyway, for me it depends what I'm doing. These days though, I generally have something in mind when I shoot. Occasionally, and a bit more often now, I can visualize some shots before I take it.

It really depends on what the purpose of my photography that day is. Macro, Street, Landscape, Architecture, Sport etc. etc. all have different demands, some shots can be planned meticulously in advance whereas others are spontaneous and you just have to be prepared for the moment in terms of equipment and technique.
Sometimes I have an idea that I try to implement a plan of action for (e.g. the recent Flight Trails & Food Food Glorious Food threads) and on others it's just fun to see what comes your way.

All of the above, but I do spend most of my time trying to come up with something beyond the usual, beyond camera settings and beyond the usual "vision." I'm sort of always working an "angle." Occasionally something happens or pops up unexpectedly, and my problem with it usually is that I don't take enough time to think it through, until I get it full-screen, slap my hand to my forehead and say: I should have done this...or I should have tried that... The more a camera can do, and the more I learn about photography, the more I'm likely to forget something, not about camera settings, but set-up and execution.
Many years ago, I realized I have some character traits that can cause trouble, such as compulsiveness, perfectionism and obsesiveness, and instead of trying to deny or banish them completely, I try to funnel them into aspects that benefit from such nerosis. Photography is one of them.

yeah, that's it-- it's the obsessive/compulsiveness that gets me in trouble, you think that's why we do this photography stuff, some how it relieves that, but at the same time it intensifies it too ?
