Photozone has just posted a technical review of the DA 40 L. This review shows a completely different picture (pun intended). Some interesting findings:

1. Even sharpness throughout the image (center to borders) with excellent resolution at F/5.6
2. Very well controlled chromatic aberrations

Perhaps there was something wrong with sample tested at Photodo, I dunno. At 2.8, it's a bit slow for candids, but if you've got controlled lighting that shouldn't be a problem.

50mm f1.7 SMC-A from eBay works well for me. Under $100, in near-mint condition.
