My *IST DL leapt out of a camera bag when a snap failed and sailed onto a slate floor.  It works perfectly in every way still except that when you go press the shutter button - nothing.  I got a quote of about $200 US from Pentax to look at it.  So I got a K2000...

Anyone know what I should do with the old one? Is there any market for dead cameras?

Hey Tim,

Have you tried the camera in Manual Focus mode. In auto focus the camera will not allow the shutter to release until focus is proven. Also try to isolate whether it is the camera body or the lens by placing on an older manual lens. It may be just that the lens is damaged and can not focus to satisfy the camera or communicate with the body.
You could check out the mirror operation by using the flip up mirror feature used for cleaning
Also try a self timer photo to by pass the shutter release button in Manual focus mode

You would be surprised what people buy on Ebay for parts. I bought a damaged Konica on Ebay for the back LCD screen. I had to fix my daughters first digital camera because it was in her back pack and someone sat on the back pack. I bought defective camera for $15 and used the screen from it. (cost me $22 total with shipping). Some of the cameras went for up to $50 for a (point and shoot).

Spyglass is so right about ebay if you don't want to mess with it yourself.  There is someone who is technically inclined with a broken LCD screen just looking for yours.  I have sold non functioning cell phones on there (the WET ones) instead of throwing them away to folks looking for the screens, or keypads or whatever.

Thanks everyone -

I did try everything I could think of - different lenses, different settings (manual, etc.), different batteries, all that stuff.

I might try the E-bay thing although I am not am E-bay sorta person.  Does anyone use the equipment area on this forum?

You can post it in our equipment section (hey it is free). Also try Craigslist (very decent because it caters to local sales), and Ebay.

Good Luck!
