I have read about this happening on other forums as well. It's made me treat the selector with care ever since (I'm not suggesting you did anything other than that though). I don't know the repair cost but I'll bet it's in the $100-200 range as it will take being sent to Pentax repair (last time I did that the cleaned the sensor just for good measure!).

OTOH, if it was set in the on position, you can live with it for most situations. If not, well, I'd be contacting Pentax ASAP.

Oh, BTW it would suck big time to have that happen. I've had to repair my K20 after dropping it with my external flash attached which broke the flash and the k20, that was a $270 mistake. Good luck.

Hopefully the damage is minimal (like the operator handle coming off but the actual switch mechanism inside being fine). These type of levers generally press onto a transfer shaft, or they have an shaft like protrusion incorporated in their design that inserts into the switch body, that allow them to manipulate the switch. Take a good look. If nothing is physically broken, and the lever has just popped off, you might be able to purchase the lever and put in on yourself. My guess is that it will be a press fit (either onto a shaft or into hole). I would also put a question to Pentax about the camera's weather resistant seal with regards to this switch.

The SR feature is one that I never use. If mine failed I would hope it was in the off position so that I would not have any issues with tripod mounting (they indicate in the user manual that the SR feature should always be turned off when the camera is mounted to a tripod or other solid fixed mount system)

Good luck and let us know how you make out.

I've always wondered why the sr funtion should be off when on a tripod ! Somewhere in the back of my mind I think I read once why, but I can't remember. Who can enlighten me ?

they way I understand it with shake reduction on the camera is looking for shake to counterbalance it but when it is on a tripod and the camera should not be shaking then it is looking for shake not finding any but counterbalancing it anyway and that can lead to slight blur.
if your tripod is on a platform that is shaking then leave shake on if the tripod is still then turn it off.

"hopefulle the damage is minimal (like the operator handle coming off but the actual switch mechanism inside being fine)"

well mine looks just like this one sorry about a link another forum

http://www.pentaxforums.c...on-switch-broken-off.html

as you can see in this picture the little shiny thing in the middle is the screw then the left over base of the lever and round that is a o-ring. I would take a guess that it is the pressure put on the lever from the rubber on the oring that helps to break it so it pops off like it seems to. Maybe some cameras they used the wrong o-ring that puts more pressure on the level..... just my guess

"If nothing is physically broken, and the lever has just popped off"

after some phone calls found out that the lever is screwed into the camera from a screw inside the camera body so the body would have to be taken apart to access the screw and install the new lever on the outside of the body. The lever, oring, and new screw is like $4.00 in parts and labor will be so far $150.00 to $250.00 depending on the place. I have a Mack Camera extended warrenty but they say it only covers manufacture defects which I would consider this to be but I have to mail it too them for them to tell me if they will fix it or not. It seems like a scam to me but I have looked at all my options now and I guess I will mail it too them and hopefully they are not scam artists

"SR feature is one that I never use"

I use the SR all the time but do want to have control to turn it off and really do not want the whole in the back of my camera. I turned the SR off and on with a toothpick today since it broke last night

time to find bubble wrap

I can image that the switch could easily catch on something and break off when the camera is slipped in  and out of some bags, or when the camera is hung around your neck it may catch on your shirt or jacket, etc. Not the best design (might have been better to have as a selectable feature in the "function menu". or a button that can toggle the feature on and off.

hmmm $4 in parts / $200 in labour makes you wonder if the part would have been better (perhaps $8) would you even be in this situation.

Take it to get fixed.  After all, it's only money and it'll make you happier to have it "un-broken" again.
