I had never seen pics of small birds in flight, so last year I set out to capture them--full frame. Small size and fast wing beat make it a challenge.

Well, how is your capture project going? Want to provide some of the technical details to your approach?

Settled upon 100mm, good light, 2000 sec., around f-4.5, 400 ISO, tripod, patience and timing.

Sounds like a good formula. When you said full frame - do you mean filling the image or something else?

Well, almost full frame, as above, for BIF. But I did develop another method of getting full frame on small birds, again with the 100mm and flash, such as with this house finch.

Really like #1.
