Sigma 18-250mm HSM OS

Just ordered one because from the limited reviews I have seen it looks good enough to use when just taking "snaps" or when you really can have just one lens.
They are pretty new but has anyone tried one yet?

I think I've seen the same reviews. Unfortunately I already have the Tamron 18-250 and really haven't been interested in upgrading it. This length is quite useful though as a travel lens. I did a backpack trip last year with it (the Tammy) and got good results, although it's a compromise for sure. Well, when you get it and feel like it. Give us your thoughts.

Hi Tim,
It is coming from B&H so should be here this week. Probably take it to the zoo next week, should be a good test at a range of lengths.

Well at 630g and 67mm filter, it's pretty massive. It also has a lot of special glass.
Therefore, It's reasonable to expect that they have avoided too many compromises.
I think with computer modelling they are now able to make these super zooms a lot higher quality than once was possible.
Basically, I think the main weakness will be it's small aperture - so it may be wise to travel with a second lens for after dark.

Hi Pete, I cannot be of help, but would be very(!) interested in reading your experiences with that lens, as I am also on the lookout for a walk-around zoom, for those occasions, where I can't or would not klike to carry a full bag with lenses with me. I was originally looking at the DA 18-135, but the reviews are so mixed, that I for know will refrain from buying it.
Regards,
Ben
