I now have both DA16-45 and Sigma 17-70. I must say that I prefer the Sigma 17-70 over the DA16-45. IQ is quite similar, when looking at the photos I would not be able to tell which is which. But the 17-70 is much more versatile, the difference between 16 and 17 is not so big, but 70mm gives a welcome additional reach.

I have some photos taken with this 17-70 lens on http://www.pbase.com/tcom/lakeconstance.

Hope I could help.

If I were doing it again, I would likely chose the Sigma 17-70 and 100-300/4.  That pair would provide some serious performance at any focal length I would ever really need.

.... but I should mention that my favorite, of the lens I own, is the DA 16-45.  It's a lot of fun to use, although I find it a little big and heavy.

So the 17-70 has the edge for:
f2.8 (low light)
Walk around lens
Macro

I have both the Pentax 16-45mm and the Sigma 17-70mm. The WA part below f5.6 is the worst part of the lens. The Pentax 16-45mm is better at 17mm f4.0 than the Sigma. At apertures 8.0 and 11.0 there is hardly any difference.
