ConocoPhillips Refinery Night Shot

A night shot of the ConocoPhillips refinery near Ferndale in Washington, USA. I was heading home Sunday night from Sandy Point and drove past the plant. I had to turn around to take a least one shot. I parked as close to the fence as possible and set my tripod up in the box of my pickup to help see over the chain link fence. I liked the crispness of the steam coming from the plant, but did not want to select a high ISO to support a fast shutter speed and suffer noise in the dark regions. I went for a low ISO and a lengthy shutter duration. I always like the starring you get with lights when using long shutter duration night shots. The steam became elongated and softer and has more of a fire feel . The early evening sky was just nearing the end of the blue hour.

Nice shot. Refineries at night make great subjects.

I saw a whole series in Nat Geo years ago of industrial shots like this. Cool.
