The next day we got up before sunrise to go to Bryce Point to try to get some images of sunrise lighting of the canyon. If you ever go here Bryce Point is considered to be "the" place for this. Bryce Canyon photography is all about sunrise images really as all of the amphitheaters face east and can be wonderful in morning light. We got there with a gaggle of other tourists/photographers (French, German, British, and assorted other countries)

I like the first one here, but wouldn't that have been a good candidate for HDR?

Yes it would have been better with HDR, but people were moving around too much for that. I would have had ghosting in it. Honestly, it was a grab shot for context purposes.

That same day we decided to explore more southern Utah east of Bryce Canyon and drove about 90 miles east. We stopped at a number of smaller parks and overlooks. The terrain changes very rapidly here and each rise or summit presented us with a new set of wonders. Here are a few from this side trip.

58 - Local humor - 645 film image

59 - Entrance to Kodachrome Basin State Park - With the elimination of kodachrome film in 2010, I couldn't pass up a park named for it. Actually, there is some history of development of the film and the park.

60 - Short hike in Kodachrome Basin

61 - The western view from Kodachrome Basin - in distance in the center of the image you can see the walls of Bryce Canyon. I love this this by the way. This one will be printed large on canvas too.

Never herd of it. Just being there seemed to give your pics more color and pop. Spooky.

Moving further east from Kodachrome Basin we found ourselves east of the Aquarius Plateau, that plus clouds made me stop for a few shots.

65 - Grand Canyon of the Escalante - further east we arrived at an overlook of undulating red and white sandstone that seemed to go on forever.

66 - Grand Canyon of the Escalante - well it didn't go on forever and this is the other side of it but it was a huge area to cross with many canyons and streams.

Wow..this is uncanny....we were in Kodachrome on Sept 27, and drove on up Hwy 12 and took the Burr Trail at Boulder to Bullfrog....so I am keenly waiting to see where you went next.

We went to Boulder City to see the Anasazi Museum. I would have loved to continue and visited Capital Reef but time and weather required that we return. So I was there essentially a week later than you.

Took a few days off here so time to get back to it.

So, after 5 days and 4 nights (the last one being a very rainy one), we packed up and headed for Zion National Park about one hour's drive away. But before we left we took one last shot.

67 - Mandatory we were there shot at the park entrance.

68 - And the other mandatory we were there shot at Zion NP

Ok, we have those out of the way.

Zion National Park is west of Bryce Canyon and takes about an hour to get from park boundary to park boundary. In Bryce, you are on top of the canyon, in Zion you are at the bottom of the canyon, interesting actually. There are other differences too, Zion is mostly old sandstone and is quite different than Bryce, gone are the hoodoos and in their place are spectacular rock walls.

69 - The Watchman - near the main entrance of the park is this impressive rock (about 1,500 about the canyon floor) called the Watchman. It's very striking.

71 - Looking up Zion Canyon from park entrance

_IGP5040 by blackcloudbrew, on Flickr

72 - Zion Canyon and Virgin River - Zion Canyon was created by this river and is still being created by it.

_IGP5053 by blackcloudbrew, on Flickr

73 - Bridge over Virgin River and canyon walls

_IGP5049_50_51 by blackcloudbrew, on Flickr

74 - Angels Landing - a signature rock again more than 1,400 feet above the canyon floor is Angels Landing. Although my 12-24 lens tends to diminish it, it's a very impressive rock and hike. Look it up.

The 12-24 does diminsh it a bit, but a great lens none the less. We hiked most of the way back along the river bank...had to get back on the road occasionally, but a good walk.

I purchased the new Tamron 10-24 whilst we were over there, that focal length range is a necessary tool when it comes to landscapes. I left home with the 21 as my wide lens but after using Daves 12-24 in Canada.... could not deny the need.  Roll Eyes. Would have got a 12-24 but none were available.

Thanks for sharing the trip.

Grant - I've used bot the Tamron 10-24 (I had a loaner) and of course my 12-24. I prefer the 12-24 of the two. I'm almost done with the trip photos but I have a few more to go. Thanks.
