Well, I've read Popular Photography for many years. I don't believe you can go wrong with that.

Ya know how some magazines have taken to running a page showing what was in that issue 25 and 50 years ago? It's sort'a disheartening when you find yourself sayin' "Hey, I remember that article about usin' blue flash bulbs, an' that piece by Herb Keppler -- and the front page picture, too."

I don't find much of interest in the current crop of magazines. Outdoor Photography  and Shutterbug sometimes have things that catch my interest but' I'm also a sucker for any $10 special offer that'll distract or entertain me for half an hour a month for a year too.

I've found a much more productive way to spend a coupl'a subscriptions worth of pocket change is to visit used book stores. I've accumulated quite a few books of lasting reference use that way and don't have to throw away all those magazine advertizements after half an hour of casual page flippin'.

Free magazine download sites (roughly one per site per half an hour is free unless you sign up for the accelerated downloads - not necessary IMO).  Not just photography but lots of those too.

Careful though .. you may end up downloading so many magazines you have not for photography.  Good reading !

thanks frogfish,   for the links.     which magazine do you like best?
and pacerr,    i used to have a couple used book stores close by,   but they aren't in business anymore,   sometimes i buy stuff through alibris or abe books,  on line;   so,   i guess,  since you've re-awakened that awareness,     i'll have to start a search for local bookstores again.    thanks.

Amazon has some amazing used bargains listed along with their new books. I can't figure out what prompted them to compete with the new books, but I just bought a like-new used hardcover there for $ .92 ! The postage was $2.95.

Search on "Amazon > Books > Photography" and explore the used offerings next to the new prices.

(BTW, Admin-doGs, a  Books > reviews / swaps / sell booth would be interesting and so-far, unique in the Pentax forum arena I believe.  BBA's a serious affliction too ya know.  And a thread showing folks photo book shelf(s) would be interesting if ya could read the titles.)

The magazines are free so download as many as you have the patience for (there are limitations on the amount of MBs per hour etc. so best to just download a couple every couple of hours over a few days). Usually there are articles in almost all of them that are of interest (they give short previews the contents).
