I just had an idea to try this, all are 15 second exposures from sometime soon after when the lights of the planes come into sight. Taken right in front of the landing runway at Hong Qiao airport in Shanghai.  Frustrating is not the word, it was around one second after the planes cleared the trees in front of me to them flying over my head and trying to time that was .... aagh !

ISO 80, RAW, 15 Secs, Contax Zeiss 28 at f8.

Love the Starboard (green) and Port (red) light flanking the white landing lights.

Are the dots on each S & P light line the result of strobes. I also see a orange dot in the center white collection.

Thank you kind Sir. Yes the S & P lights are strobes. I can only surmise that the Orange dot is another strobe (I'm guessing by the front wheel flap) ?

True -- it's a required red rotating beacon on the belly of the aircraft. Normally one is also present on top of large aircraft. Today, most are actually strobes rather than rotating reflectors with an electrical bulb.

Missing from this view would be the white tail light that matches the red and green side lights. Same as required on maritime vessels.

Devote a little attention to the white "landing-light" configuration in the day time and you could identify the type aircraft by the light pattern. And note the double-flash wing tip strobes in the third shot.
