Keeping in step with the current TV viewing trends, we thought we would try out a photography challenge contest here at PentaxWorld. We have named it THE QUEST.

Here is how it works.

The Quest is made up of 4 challenges (items to be photographed). The individual that successfully completes each challenge, and is able to advance to the finish, is the Champion.
Everyone can enter the Quest at the start and submit their item (image) for the first challenge.
Voting will take place (open to all PentaxWorld members) for the first challenge (first quest item), and the top 10 winners (based on number of votes) will advance to the next (2nd) round.
In the event that voting does not clearly define the top 10 winners (tie situations), preference will be given to the order in which the submissions were received. (all others are knocked out of the Quest and can continue to follow the contest along, vote, cheer, etc)

The 10 winners of the first challenge advance to the second challenge
They will be given the next item in the quest.
Voting will take place (open to all PentaxWorld members) for the second challenge (second quest item), and the top 5 winners (based on number of votes) will advance to the next (3rd) round.
In the event that voting does not clearly define the top 5 winners (tie situations), preference will be given to the order in which the submissions were received.

The 5 winners of the second challenge advance to the third challenge
They will be given the next item in the quest.
Voting will take place (open to all PentaxWorld members) for the third challenge (third quest item), and the top 3 winners (based on number of votes) will advance to the final (4th) round.
In the event that voting does not clearly define the top 3 winners (tie situations), preference will be given to the order in which the submissions were received.

The 3 winners of the third challenge advance to the 4th and final challenge
They will be given the last item in the quest.
Voting will take place (open to all PentaxWorld members) for the fourth and final challenge (fourth quest item), and the top winner (based on number of votes) will be crowned Champion.
In the event that voting does not clearly define the winner (tie situations), we will enter into a challenge round. A fifth challenge will arranged.

[confused Huh don't be, just enter the first challenge as you would normally enter our monthly contest, and we will guide everyone and everything along. We will announce each stage of the quest and notify those who advance via PM & posted list]

Remember the object is :

1) Have Fun first
2) Try and connect with the voting horde
3) See how far you can advance
4) Win the contest and be Champion

Guidelines:
1. Photo Size: 500~800 pixels on the max width/height.
2. File Size: Not more than 512KB.
3. Submit using the ATTACHMENT feature in this thread. Post a reply to this thread with your entry.
4. One photo per challenge per member. (photo must be taken using a Pentax camera)
5. Submitted photo must NOT have entered the previous contest in PENTAXWORLD before. Photos can have entered other competitions except PENTAXWORLD. We do not want duplicated entries in PENTAXWORLD photo competitions.
6. Image can be captured by a Pentax film camera, and image scanned.
7. Have fun!

All submitted photos (attachment) will not be visible to members. This is to help let the image stand on its own and provide a fair voting later.

Time Line

Challenge 1 Submission     June 21st to June 27th  ("something old") - first quest item
Voting for Challenge 1      June 28th to July 4th (completed)

Challenge 2 Submission    July 5th to July 11th  ("something new") - second quest item
Voting for Challenge 2     July 12th to July 18th (extended to July 20th) (completed)

Challenge 3 Submission    July 21st to July 31st ("something borrowed ") - third quest item
Voting for Challenge 3     Aug 2nd to Aug 10th  (completed)

Challenge 4 Submission   Aug 11th to Aug 20th ("something blue ") - fourth quest item
Voting for Challenge 4    Aug 21st to Aug 30th (completed)

And the winner is Craig (formerly known as Ironshot)  Cool

All right, you have thrown down the gauntlet!
Before I pick it up let's clarify a thing: Do the entries have to be photographed within the submission period? The wording seems to suggest that (and I think it would make perfect sense).

Excellent idea, let's all get ready...

There is no real way of verifying when a Member took a photo, but the likelihood that they may already have a photo to meets the quest item would probably be low. Members may also see the benefit of selecting their shot to best match the voters fancy and want to take a shot specifically for the challenge.

All images will be kept anonymous throughout the contest. We will post and announce the names of the members that do advance at each stage (to keep interest alive and cheer the successful along).

Our hope is that everyone will see the fun, and the competitive spirit, in this new feature to PentaxWorld. Based on participation (number of entries) and general interest (number of voters) we will decide where and how far we can enjoy this style of interaction. Personally I would like to see a few different challenge series. (image themes ranging from fun to difficult, grouped accordingly). We could also shorten the overall time line if we knew that members could work within tighter time lines. The present time line was selected to offer one full week for each phase. We have a few ideas to use the time span to keep the interest level up and play along with the competition.

I am glad that you are up and ready for the challenge.  Cool  The first Quest item is "something old". Although the start date is officially Sunday June 14th, nothing wrong with a bit of a head start  Wink Wink

Tim, that is true, EXIF data can be faked. But would it be in the spirit of the quest to take photos from the archives? With a big archive and a variety of shots taken the likelihood is not that low. I'm sure that I could find something old in my archives that would be good enough for a try.

The voters fancy is difficult to fathom (as one can see from the monthly challenge, I'm often surprised at the distribution of votes). And as amateurs we can afford the luxury to take photos that we like. I know that I won't spend too many thoughts on what might and what might not take the voters fancy.

As for the timeline: I think one week is minimum. During the working week most of us (I guess) are not finding a lot of time and opportunity to shoot a special theme. In another forum we have a fortnightly competition and a fortnight can be short when you have a shot in mind that requires special conditions (i.e. sunny or rainy weather). So for this quest I think that one week is a good compromise but it shouldn't go any shorter than that.

The downside of that is that for most of us this means three weeks of watching how the quest unfolds (as only 10 will remain in competition). We will find out how it goes by the number of votes for the later rounds of the quest...

One more thing: Maybe you should transfer our comments to a separate thread and keep this one free for the submissions. (Of course, in the process you could add a link to that comment/discussion thread in your first post).

Let's get ready to rumble...

It's easy to over think this contest for sure. However, it struck me that a week might be a bit tight if I was doing film to enter this contest. Also, I'd agree with Prieni that one week is a bare minimum of time to go shoot and I'd suggest two weeks (or whatever a fortnight is  Wink) for the first round. Without a bit more time, given the first theme, I'm more likely to use shots I've taken versus go on a quest for a new something old. $0.02.

The first challenge image officially offers a full week (but we hinted early). Wink  We can post the upcoming theme for the next challenge during the voting period for the current / previous image (giving members 2 weeks to capture images for the second, third and fourth challenges respectively) The only risk is that members that do not not advance may end up taking photos that they can not submit.
