When I try to look at the images posted here I get a message saying that I am not permitted to see them. Is that because of my membership status or because the images will not be made available until judging starts?

Jonska,  Welcome to the forum!  You are correct.  The photos will not be unveiled until the voting period.  Check back here on June 29th.  Feel free to look at the other threads in the forum for photos and post a few yourself if you like.  I hope you enjoy your time here. Wink

I know we had that before, but what are the size limits good for when images are allowed in that are a whopping 542 percent over size? (That it didn't stay within the 512 kByte limit is understandable under the circumstances...)

BTW: It's a great shot!

I guess 20 percent of entries (3 out of 15) not by the rules is not too bad?

Sorry to be the grumpy old man again, I can't help it Wink

i have to agree with you prieni
the rules clearly state that size/height 500-800 pixels
and file size of no more than 512 kb
although at the top it says 'guidelines'
having said that the members who submit pictures within the guidelines
are at a distinct disadvantage,
to those who are allowed to submit huge pictures which can be viewed in all their glory
as a post note, all the entries are at a very high standard
and im not a grumpy old man i just like things to be equal

Personally, I think this is my second run at this contest and I feel very unsure about commenting or what's right and/or what has been the practice. Clearly I've seen that many times a larger image can be better for one image over a smaller one so the size is part of the competition, in that you have to work with it for your image. It's very sportsmanlike of you Jim to take your photo off, but I think as this is a friendly competition, I'd suggest that we just draw the line for next time (or has this been done before?) and let these all stand for a vote.

$0.02.

Tim,
I wholeheartedly agree with you.

Jimbo, no need to take your shot off (that's what I think anyway). The small advantage that may be gained by submitting bigger pictures has been cancelled out by compressing this big pic near to the 512 kB mark. And now that the cat is out of the bag: I did vote for your shot already...

Good luck everyone,
 Prieni

Good Evening PentaxWorld, one and all,

I would like to first apologize for any rule or guideline not being properly enforced. As the person responsible for the photo contest it is my duty to review all the entries and ensure that they conform to the rules. Had I done my job correctly in accordance with the rules we would not be having this discussion. We would probably have had 12 images in our competition rather than 15. Like a fisherman casting his net, desperately seeking contestants, I would miss the 3 that got away more than I would appreciate the 12 in the net. Such small numbers, so very fragile a thing.

I think it would be a sad day when we allow competition to come between friends here at PentaxWorld. I would rather lose to a good friend than triumph over a stranger. I believe that we should hold the rudder hard on our present course, and allow our good friend Jimbo to keep his entry in our contest.

Thank you for your understanding,

I really appreciate your understanding but rules are rules. I just need to learn a little more about sizing my files down. I have no problem at all with taking my shot off the list guys, honestly. This has come up before and after viewing all the images I do see what you all mean. I will get this figured out for July's I promise.  Good luck and since its my birthday, I am heading out for the day shooting. Cheers JIM
